ADHD and money: Disorganised paperwork and receipts

Paperwork can be a major struggle for people with ADHD due to a mix of cognitive and executive functioning challenges. Here’s why it can feel overwhelming:

Working Memory Issues – Keeping track of receipts, bills and other paperwork can be difficult when your brain doesn’t naturally hold onto that information. Out of sight = out of mind. ADHDers often struggle with things they don’t have sight of. If paperwork isn’t immediately visible, it’s easy to forget it even exists. That’s how unpaid bills or lost receipts pile up.

Task Initiation & Switching – Paperwork often involves multiple steps: finding documents, filling them out, scanning, emailing, etc. Each step can feel like a separate task, making it hard to start or finish.

Time Blindness – Deadlines often feel abstract or non-urgent until they’re suddenly overdue. This can lead to last-minute stress or missed payments.

Boredom & Mental Fatigue – Let’s be real, paperwork is rarely exciting. ADHD brains crave stimulation, and filling out forms doesn’t provide much dopamine. One thing I have learned (but don’t always do) is that I need to deal with paperwork and finance little and often. If I let it build up I will avoid it and that makes everything worse.

Perfectionism & Paralysis – Worrying about getting it just right can lead to putting things off. Overthinking can make a simple form feel like an impossible task.

There are lots of ways of managing your finances from double entry cashbooks, through spreadsheets to apps. Keeping track of paperwork can also be manual and analogue in boxes to scanned or photographed and stored in cloud folders or within a finance system. You need to find the method which works for you and which you will do routinely.

Make it as frictionless as possible. I use a service called dext for my business purchase invoices. I can email a bill to it or snap a photo using a phone app. The details of the receipt or bill are then extracted and then queued for entry into my bookkeeping system.

I also have a fireproof document case which I use to sort paperwork into. Within the case is a number of wallets with different types of document within them. This is just interesting enough to make it less of a chore for me to find a place to store documents.

How do you make dealing with money less stressful, annoying or dull when it comes to paperwork?
